Scott McCloud had an interesting post over on his blog today…

“12/22: Just heard Magnet’s great cover version of “Lay Lady Lay” (iTunes has it if you’re curious). It got me thinking about my favorite covers. Way too many to mention, but a few that really changed the song in interesting ways for me include Gary Jules’ “Mad World” from Donnie Darko, Ella Fitzgerald’s slow “Fascinating Rhythm” (1959 stereo version w/Nelson Riddle), Walter Carlos’ 3rd Brandenburg from Switched on Bach, TMBG doing “Hey, We’re the Replacements” (heh), Moxy Fruvous’ “Spiderman” and the Flying Lizards’ “Money.” Beethoven covering Schiller’s “Ode to Joy” was pretty good too.”

Got me thinking about recent covers that I’ve heard… and I’ve got to tell you I haven’t heard one that has really done much for me. From the Black Eyed Peas perversion of “I Wonder if I Take You Home” to Gwen Stefani’s equally bad take on Fiddler on the Roof… what were they all thinking?

Sun Kil Moon’s recent album of Modest Mouse covers is intriguing. I’m not sure how I feel about Modest Mouse. I enjoy a couple of their songs, but the rest of their stuff leaves me dry. I get a similar feeling from the Sun Kil Moon album, but for completely different reasons. Go figure.

What covers have you heard recently?

  • Haven’t heard any new ones lately, but two of my favorites are Tori Amos doing Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You,” and the Bangles doing Simon and Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter.”
